Tourists Welcome. Until They Move In Next Door.

This week at Spanish Super Tutor, we’re talking about tourism.

Not the postcard version.

The messy one.

You love tourists when they fill your restaurant.

You’re less enthusiastic when a suitcase rattles past your bedroom at three in the bloody morning.

Same visitors.

Different side of the wall.

Tourism can bring money into local businesses. But its growth can also put pressure on housing and leave residents struggling with rising costs. (unwto.org)

So what happens when a neighbourhood starts feeling like a hotel?

Who gets the money?

Who gets the noise?

And who can still afford to live there?

Before we start shouting “tourists go home,” there’s one awkward detail.

Most of us have been the tourist.

The suitcase.

The person blocking the pavement while photographing a sandwich.

Yes. Us too.

In our Spanish lessons in Hong Kong, this week’s question is simple:

¿El turismo beneficia o perjudica a las ciudades?Does tourism benefit or harm cities?

Pick a side.

Then defend it in Spanish.

Try:

“El turismo beneficia a la ciudad porque…”Tourism benefits the city because…

Or:

“El problema no son los turistas, sino…”The problem isn’t the tourists, but…

No perfect answer required.

You’re here to practise expressing an opinion.

Not to solve global tourism before dinner.

We’ll work on the Spanish.
