Learn Spanish with: A bucket with hundreds of crickets
Hello everyone,
Today I want to tell you the story of when my brother and I brought a bucket full of crickets home and they escaped at night. One of the funniest nights I remember.
I remember the day perfectly. It was May 1, 1984 and my mother was in the hospital, the next day we would have a baby sister. Pilar was on her way. Taking care of us was my grandmother Juani, a very loving woman and although she had mobility problems she was a very hard working and dynamic lady.
It was a Tuesday holiday and the next day we didn't have school either, so the children were in the street all day playing, from 10 am until lunchtime and then down again and playing until dinnertime. What a great childhood of street, children and games! It was in the afternoon when we decided to take a walk in the countryside and go cricket hunting.
Crickets have their lair in soft soil, it is a hole they make at an angle so that when it rains they don't get water in them because otherwise they would drown. If you ever go to the field and see a hole a little smaller than the thickness of a finger and it is at an angle, it is most likely a cricket.
To catch crickets you need to pour a little water into their lair while sticking a straw into their lair. The water already indicates to him that he can drown and the straw stresses him, it makes him think that any predator wants to enter and inside his comfortable "little house" he would not be safe, so he has to get out. Many times, we ran out of water and had to pee in the hole. We would draw lots to see who had to pee and many times, due to lack of desire, we had to wait a long time for the desire to come in. I remember standing with my little tail out, pointing to the hole and waiting for a few drops to fall.
We wanted the crickets because we wanted to tame them and make a circus show with them, something that after trying several times we saw that it was impossible. We made them climb up a rope and wanted them to dance while we clapped our hands. They never danced.
That day we went a lot of children to the field, with a lot of water and a lot of urination, so the result was positive. Many crickets in a bucket that we got before nightfall, crickets, which on the other hand nobody could take home because no mother wanted to have a bucket full of crickets at home, .... but my parents were not at home and my grandmother would not find out so it was my brother who took the initiative saying that we could take them ourselves. A great idea
The cricket is different from the cricket because it only has two tails and the female has three, but also because it is the male cricket that sings, and boy do they sing! The difference between having hundreds of crickets at home or not having them is abysmal, you rest much better if you do not have a bucket full of crickets escaping all over the house.
We left the lid open so they could breathe but we didn't expect them to jump out of the bucket .... and they did, crickets are very good jumpers and they didn't like being locked in a bucket so they decided to jump out and look for their own comfort in any corner of the house. there were crickets everywhere!
Hearing the sound of a cricket in the countryside is nice and relaxing, harmony of nature, the feeling changes a lot but if there are dozens of them in your house, they don't stop, it's continuous noise! I remember my grandmother with her angry mobility problem sweeping crickets, my brother Carlos and me with the bucket looking all over the house while we laughed. Long live being a child!
