In this interactive IGCSE Spanish lesson, students explore the topic of recycling, environmental responsibility and government action while developing key skills in speaking, reading, vocabulary and grammar. The lesson begins with a warm-up based on opinion questions about recycling and the environment, designed to activate prior vocabulary and encourage students to speak in Spanish from the start. Students then read and discuss two opposing opinions: a mother recycles glass, paper, metal and organic waste at home because she believes protecting the planet is everyone’s responsibility. Antonio, however, believes that the government and local councils should take action instead of placing the responsibility on individual citizens. Through reading activities, vocabulary flashcards, quiz questions, true or false tasks, correction of false statements and debate prompts, students learn how to express opinions clearly and confidently in Spanish. Students practise vocabulary related to recycling, rubbish, waste, pollution, climate change, environmental protection, local councils, public services, rules, responsibilities and sustainable habits. They also strengthen their grammar by conjugating verbs in six key verb tenses, including the present, preterite, imperfect, present perfect, near future and subjunctive. This lesson helps students discuss real-life questions such as whether citizens should recycle more, whether governments should provide better recycling systems, whether fines should exist for people who do not recycle, whether individual action can make a difference, and whether environmental protection depends more on personal habits or public policy.
