If You Could Time Travel: Past or Future?

In this interactive IGCSE Spanish lesson, students explore time travel and conditional sentences in Spanish while developing confidence in speaking and grammar. The lesson begins with a warm-up based on conditional opinion questions, encouraging students to speak in Spanish using “if” structures from the start. Students then read and discuss two opposing opinions: Lucía would travel to the future to see how technology develops, while Marco would choose the past to experience history first-hand. Through reading activities, vocabulary flashcards, quiz questions, true or false tasks, correction of false statements and debate prompts, students practise forming accurate and natural conditional sentences in Spanish. The lesson focuses on the three main types of conditional sentences: 1️⃣ Real conditionals for possible situations: Si + present + present / future / imperative Example: Si tengo tiempo, viajo al campo. Example: Si ahorras, podrás viajar. 2️⃣ Potential conditionals for imaginary present or future situations: Si + imperfect subjunctive + simple conditional Example: Si pudiera viajar en el tiempo, iría al futuro. 3️⃣ Unreal past conditionals for impossible past situations: Si + pluperfect subjunctive + compound conditional Example: Si hubiera viajado al pasado, habría conocido a mi abuelo. Students practise vocabulary related to time travel, the past, the future, history, technology, inventions, memories, regrets and imagination. They also learn how to give opinions using connectors, examples and comparisons. This lesson helps students discuss creative questions such as whether they would visit the future, change the past, meet historical figures, see future technology, prevent mistakes or discover what the world will be like.
